How to ensure your TightVacs have a long and happy life…
TightVacs, although totally brilliant are not totally indestructible, and do require a certain degree of care and maintenance to optimise longevity and performance.
Misuse of your TightVacs can result in substandard performance, as well as unnecessary breakages and damage to the plastics or parts of the containers.
Here’s a quick guide to general use - it’s not difficult or confusing but your TightVac will appreciate it!
PRESS THE BUTTON! Always PRESS THE BUTTON when placing AND removing caps/lids - this is essential to push the air through the valve one way or the other, thus allowing the lid to slide on and off freely, and keeping the air in or out!
LINE UP THE CAPS PROPERLY Always line the caps up squarely with the base when replacing it, taking particular care with the KiloVacs and BreadVacs bayonet locks. If treated roughly and forced on at angles, lids can split and the tiny bayonet nubs can be broken off.
HAND WASH ONLY DO NOT put Tightvacs in the dishwasher, and thoroughly dry immediately afterwards - This will prevent the clouding effect that a lot of soaps and chemicals have on clear plastic.
AVOID ABRASIVE CLEANING MATERIALS Abrasive cleaning cloths and scourers can damage the plastic, making them appear cloudy. Use soft cloths or sponges with a hot water and standard washing up liquid when cleaning your TightVacs.
KEEP CAP INTERIOR & TOP OF CONTAINER CLEAN Neglecting the cleaning where the cap and body meet may cause the cap to become difficult to put on & off.
Storing sticky products may also cause this effect. If this does occur, clean areas thoroughly with alcohol or a strong soap. Make sure you have cleaned and dried all surfaces thoroughly before use.
PROBLEMS WITH STIFF CAPS Wax is very good for loosening caps if this has become a problem. Food grade wax , candle wax, wax paper or even use car wax can be applied to loosen the seal. Car wax is not recommended unless you can guarantee the container will NEVER be used for any type of foodstuff for humans or otherwise. Simply apply to the inside of the cap & the body of the container where the cap & body meet, let it dry and then rub it off thoroughly with a clean cloth until the surface is smooth and sliding the cap on and off becomes easier.
PROBLEMS WITH LOOSE CAPS This is completely normal with new containers. Extensive testing on extending longevity has shown that slightly looser caps can double the containers shelf life! The more you open and close a Tightvac, the tighter the seal becomes.
TintVacs (Cobalt, Rose & Emerald) are made from a different plastic material and are more slippery than clear and solid models, and the caps, when new, appear to slide off more easily than other versions. This is normal and after a few weeks of use will become harder to pull off without pressing the button. This material has the ability to last for 5 years and beyond - when properly maintained.
